Vivian Fueyo, Ph.D., Interim Regional Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, assumed her duties July 1, 2013. Dr. Fueyo is a professor of Childhood Education with extensive leadership and research experience, much of it at USF St. Petersburg.

From June 1, 2003 to January 1, 2012, she served as founding Dean of the College of Education. In 2009, she led the College to its initial national accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Colleges of Education.

Under her leadership, all programs in the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg have received full program approval from the Florida Department of Education. The BS in Education, a program unique to the College of Education, was designated as a model program for the state of Florida. This emphasis on quality has defined Dr. Fueyo’s professional career. Her professional expertise has focused on establishing school-university partnerships to improve teaching and increase student achievement for low-performing students.

During her tenure as dean, Dr. Fueyo raised nearly $4 million for scholarships and programs to improve teaching and student learning and strengthen the role of the university in improving teaching and learning in the local schools. In partnership with the Pinellas County Schools, the Progress Energy Foundation, the Helios Foundation, the Next Generation Learning Challenges out of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and SRI International, Dr. Fueyo has taken a lead in the SunBay Digital Mathematics Project This collaborative project emphasizing dynamic technologies to engage and improve student learning of complex mathematics in the middle grades, served over 2,500 Pinellas County middle grades students. The SunBay project reported significant learning gains in complex mathematical concepts for all participating middle grades students, regardless of race, language background, and achievement level, increasing the role of USF St. Petersburg as an intellectual and community resource.

From 1984-1993, Dr. Fueyo served as Director of the San Juan Teacher Training Center at California State University, Sacramento. In 1993, she joined the faculty of Florida State University, serving as Department Chair of Educational Theory and Practice from 1996-2003. One of the programs she created, the San Juan Center, earned her the Quality of Education Award for Distinguished Service to Children and the Preparation of Teachers.

Dr. Fueyo, who is the daughter of Cuban parents, is the first person in her family born in the United States. She is also the third-generation woman in her family with a university degree. Her grandmother was the first woman to graduate from the University of Havana. Dr. Fueyo, who speaks fluent French and Spanish, has dedicated her professional life to university-based teacher education and applied research. As Interim Regional Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, she welcomes the opportunity to work with the outstanding faculty, staff and students at USFSP and the university community.
