The French and Francophone Studies program offers courses in French language, French and Francophone cultures. All classes are conducted in French. The program offers a Major in World Languages and Cultures with a concentration in French and a Minor in French and Francophone Studies.
Why learn French? The French language is spoken by 169 million people in the world today from France, Belgium, Switzerland, to Canada, Martinique, Haiti, Tahiti, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Vietnam, etc. It is an official language in many world institutions, such as the UN, NATO, UNESCO, EU, OIF (International Organization of Francophonie), etc.. There is also a thriving French and Francophone community right here in Florida and the Tampa Bay Area as well as Francophone businesses.
The program encourages students to study abroad for a summer or a semester in France or a Francophone country. For information on study abroad opportunities at USFSP contact USFSP Academic Affairs Study Abroad Program. For study abroad with USF Tampa, see USF Education Abroad.
Students are encouraged to join the USFSP French Club to make friendships and share they appreciation of French and Francophone cultures.
Scholarships and Fellowships are also available for American students who wish to study or/and work in France. For a list of resources, see: French Culture. See also the Teaching Assistant Program in France, which enables American students to teach English in French schools (minor in French preferred, at least a French III level required.)
The program promotes local French cultural events in the university or in the Bay Area.
